Wind Tower, Eldorado Canyon, Boulder CO

Eldo, as it’s known locally is a legendary climbing area. And with good reason. It’s almost impossibly beautiful, with brilliant red rock interspersed with pale yellows and lush green conifers in every view. Eldo has a long history, the village being a kind of resort early in the 20th century. Now it is a state park and boasts hundreds of routes.

Climbs at Eldo are tough, and the grades are definitely old school. As an acquaintance said, unlike some areas, a 5.8 at Eldo “will definitely get your attention.”

At my level, there are a few routes which deliver a lot for their grade.  Wind Tower was one which gave all kinds of unique moves, exposure and gorgeous views.

As in most of the Boulder area, the approaches are quite civilized (at least compared to the Canadian Rockies) and the rock is first class.  You’ll have lots of company so pick your days wisely.
